Eva Hoffman先生の初来日に際して　　　Dr. Eva Hoffman’s first visit to Japan.

英国在住の　Eva Hoffman先生が初来日され、津田塾大学での招聘教授としての講義を皮切りに、日本各地を訪問され、講演や対談を行っていらっしゃいます。http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eva_Hoffman

同志社高校時代の同級生で、現在は翻訳家としてもご活躍の、津田塾大学教授・早川敦子さんから、ホフマン先生の　京都大学での講演前の数時間に、何か良い時間を過ごせないかとの連絡を受けました。http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%97%A9%E5%B7%9D%E6%95%A6%E5%AD%90_%28%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E5%AD%A6%E8%80%85%29

I received 「before Professor Hoffmann gives a lecture in Kyoto University, I would like to use time effectively」, and connection from Ms. Atsuko Hayakawa of the professor of Tsuda College. http://www.ibby.org/index.php?id=1137

She is a classmate of Doshisha high school days.

親戚のＴさんに相談しますと、すぐにメンバーそれぞれが、得意分野で企画を作り上げてくれはりました。

まずは、お昼から夕方までの限られた時間の中で、観光シーズンで渋滞することを考え、大学近くのＵさんのお宅での、昼食と　簡単なお茶席を準備することになりました。

そうと決まれば、お花のいけ込み、お食事やお菓子の手配、お茶席の準備など、気持ちの良いほどのボランティア精神と手際の良さで、メンバーのかたがたが　動いてくれはります。

I was alike and consulted with Mrs. T who is a relative.

Then, the Kamogawa-kai members planned by each area of strength immediately.
They have much volunteer spirit and drive.

Mrs. U of the neighborhood of Kyoto University offered the house.
We held lunch and a tea party there.

いつも私は、皆さまに助けられています。

当日は、早川さんが幼少の頃より親しくなさっていはります　染織家の人間国宝・志村ふくみ先生と、陶芸家の八木明先生も　おみえになりました。

Ms.Fukumi Shimura, a fabric-dyeing artist, and a ceramist, Mr. Akira Yagi, participated.
They are the friends of Ms.Hayakawa.
Ms. Shimura is a Japanese living national treasure.

 

八木先生が、イギリスから招聘なされ、イギリスの土で、バーナード・リーチの工房で焼かれましたお茶碗で、お茶を点てさせていただきました。

It is the vessel which Mr. Yagi was invited from Britain, he used the British ground, and was created in Bernard Leach’s studio.

「耀」とご銘の付けられましたこの美しいお茶碗は、その中に　宇宙を表しているとのお話しでした。

This teacup of his work was named 「Yoo＝Brightness　耀」
He expressed the universe in it.

ホフマン先生と志村先生との間でも、お話しが弾んでいました。

志村先生は、
「機織りの縦糸は歴史、横糸は自分自身。そして、自分にとって、染色し、機を織るということは、音楽を奏でたり文章を書くのと同じ、芸術です。」
「布を織ったり、文章を書きながら、いつも過去の自分と現在を　行ったり来たりしています。」
とお話しされますと、ホフマン先生も、

「まったくその通り、私も文章を書きながら、また音楽を奏でながら、過去の自分と今とを行ったり来たりしています。そして、人生の縦軸には歴史、横軸には自分自身があります。」
とおっしゃいました。

Ms. Shimura said.
「The warp of weaving is history and the woof is itself.
For me, all the things written to be dyeing and weaving are the same art.」
「I am always going back and forth between past myself and the present, while making.」

Dr. Hoffmann was also said.
「It is completely right.
I am also going back and forth during past myself and the present, writing.
And the vertical axis of my life is history and a horizontal axis is itself. 」

また、ホフマン先生のご両親は、ホロコーストを生き延びて　カナダへ亡命されましたが、そのときに母国と母国語を失ってしまったと。

そして、「喪失するから復活し、再生します。陰が無ければ、光が無いのと同じです。」とも、お話しされました。

Her parents came back alive from Holocaust, and defected to Canada.
Then, she lost the mother country and the native language.
She said.
「Since loss exists, there is revival, and there is reproduction.
Since there is shade, there is light.」

 

８９才の志村先生は、すばらしく矍鑠となさっていまして、その秘訣をうかがうと、
「植物の命に触れているからでしょうか。染料を求めて、自分でどこへでも出向き、木を切り、根を掘ります。また、その蒸気をいつも浴びています。」とのことでした。

Ms. Shimura is 89 years old.
Her head is clear and is very fine.
We asked her the secret.
She said.
「I have always got vegetable animation.
In order to obtain dye, I cut a tree by myself and dig a root.
And it is always exposed to vegetable steam. 」

また、藍染めのお話しは、とりわけ印象的でした。

「科学的にはどうか知りませんが、藍は生き物で、月の満ち欠けに影響されます。新月の日にたてて、満月の時まで育てます。　満月の日に、美しく育った藍の瓶に、両手を差し入れると、まるで宇宙そのものを抱いているかのような、何ともいえない心地良さに浸ります。」と、おっしゃいました。

私も、満月の夜に、藍の瓶に　手を浸けてみたいという思いにかられます。

The subject about indigo blue was impressive.

Ms. Shimura said.
「Indigo blue is a living thing.
The reason with scientific me is not known.
However, I think that the moon is full and indigo blue is influenced by chip.
I raise indigo blue from the day of low moon to the day of a full moon.
I insert both hands into the indigo bottle which grew up into the day of the full moon beautifully.
Then, I feel happiness which is holding the universe completely. 」

I would also like to soak both hands in an indigo bottle on the day of a full moon.

そして、この「宇宙」というキーワードが、八木先生のお茶碗と　シンクロしていました。

また、ホフマン先生は、ホロコースト二世ということで、以前　加茂川会によくおいでになっていたかたもそうでしたので、話題に出ますと、早川先生と　ごく親しいご関係とのことで、ここでもシンクロがありました。

The keyword the 「universe」 carried out synchronicity to Mr. Yagi’s teacup.

Moreover, Dr. Hoffmann is the second Holocaust.
It turned out that the woman who had participated in the Kamogawa-kai well once is also so, and she is very as intimate as the Ms.Hayakawa.

In addition, there was a lot of synchronicity.

「クラウド・アトラス」という映画があります。

Ｒ１５指定で、２０１２年のハリウッド・ワースト映画に選ばれたそうですが、私は　この映画、いろいろ考えさせられ、好きです。
何度か観ませんと、難解な点もありますし、つい目をそむけてしまうような残酷な場面もありますが（そこは２度目以降は、予測して見ないようにします）、今思い出しても、様々な意味での感慨を覚え、涙が出ます。　http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPQTWE-uj5k

It was chosen as the worst movie of Hollywood in 2012.

However, I like this movie.
I skip and look at the cruel scene after the 2nd times.

このたび出会いました、国籍も　年齢も　背景も、まるで違う人たちも、実は全て、「クラウド・アトラス」で繋がっているのでしょう。

私にとりましては、美しく懐かしい　記憶の再生でした。

However, I think that we everybody is connected in 「Cloud Atlas.」

It is reproduction of beautiful nostalgic memory for me.
